Canada plans to recognize Palestine this time
At a press conference on Wednesday, Mark Carney said that the suffering of the people in Gaza, Palestine, is unbearable. It is deteriorating rapidly. In such a situation, Canada plans to recognize Palestine at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly to be held next September. However, the Canadian president mentioned that this recognition will depend on some things. They are that the Palestinian Authority must bring fundamental reforms to its governance system, organize general elections in 2026 excluding Hamas, and promise to demilitarize the territory.
A few days ago, French President Emmanuel Macron said that Palestine would be recognized as a state in September. Later, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that he would recognize Palestine if Israel did not meet certain conditions. Currently, about 150 of the 193 member states of the United Nations officially recognize Palestine.
Pressure has been mounting on Mark Carney since the announcement by France and the UK. In the meantime, about 200 former Canadian ambassadors and diplomats wrote a letter to him last Tuesday. It called for recognizing Palestine as a state. The letter said that Israel’s actions in the occupied West Bank and Gaza have undermined Canada’s interests and values.
